The Night Before You Quit Smoking |
There are people who are able to throw their pack away halfway through the day and never smoke again. I wasn't one of them and I doubt that very many people have that kind of willpower. The fact is that once you are up and around and smoking like a madman, the nicotine in your system is going to be a powerful influence and quitting like that is going to be difficult. Quitting at night (well, in the morning really) has one nice advantage over quitting halfway through your day. That advantage is that when you wake up, you'll already be 1/3 of the way into your first day as a non-smoker and you will already be reaping the benefits of quitting smoking. I think it also helps reduce your nic fits because as soon as you light up, you'll intensify your cravings so it is in your best interest to simply start the day off without a smoke. I would suggest that you time it so that you smoke your last cigarette from your last pack just before you go to bed. This way you won't have pangs of regret over throwing some cigarettes away and you won't be tempted to dig them out of the trash. If you have a few packs sitting around, smoke them up and be done with it. Now this is the hard part - When you wake up, you don't want any evidence of your past smoking to be around the house so the night before, throw away all of your ashtrays, lighters, matches, empty cigarette packs, whatever you have. This was super hard for me so I had my wife do it for me once I fell asleep. Let me tell you, she did a great job of getting rid of all of that stuff. When I had tried it in the past, I always kept one ashtray and one lighter, just in case. That was a profoundly bad idea. By getting rid of all of your smoking stuff you are taking the first step in a fantastic journey. Good luck! |
